What Is a Wastewater Pump Station?

A wastewater pump station is essential to facilitate the flow of foul water and waste. Typically used when a gravity connection cannot be achieved to transfer wastewater from a site to the main sewer line. For example, in basements or properties with facilities below ground level. Depending on the type of pump station in place, it will be a chamber which contains two pumps and float switches that act as on and off switches. When the wastewater level inside the chamber reaches the relevant float switch, the pumps will turn on and force the wastewater to flow through the system.

How Many Sewage Pumps Are Inside a Wastewater Pump Station?

Typically, our pump stations contain two pumps: one duty pump and one backup to ensure continuous operation. In the unlikely event of station failure, the pumps alternate duty with each pump cycle to ensure even wear. However, where required, we can design single pump stations or multi-pump station to meet your needs.

Do Wastewater Pump Stations Use Telemetry?

Yes, telemetry can be used to provide remote updates on your station. The pump station as, standard, has localised audible and visual alarms for when a pump trips and or high wastewater level alarm. For remote stations, it is recommended that you consider telemetry to provide an early warning signal. It is also a requirement of some warranty providers to have telemetry in place for your pump station. Willow Pumps has its own GSM telemetry (mobile signal) unit, which is monitored 24 hours a day by our in-house team. It also has the facility for emergency contacts to be added who can be sent alerts via email or mobile. If required, access can also be given to the online portal where you can monitor your pump station in real time. As standard, the system is set up to monitor power fail, pump 1 tripped, pump 2 tripped and a high wastewater level alarm. Should you require any additional signals, let us know and we can add them to the unit accordingly. Should sufficient signal not be present for the GSM telemetry, then we can provide a high-gain aerial or different connection options.
